SEC Engaged in Major Power Restoration Efforts Following Severe Weather

– Calls on Neighboring Co-ops to Assist with Restoration –

CREWE, Va – Southside Electric Cooperative (SEC) line crews worked throughout the night to restore power to members after severe thunderstorms tore through its service area on the evening of Saturday, June 20th. At the height of the major outage event, nearly 9,300 members were without power in all 18 counties served by SEC in southern & central Virginia. As of 4:00pm on Sunday, just under 800 members remained without power in about 80 different outage locations in the hardest hit areas, which included the counties of AMELIA, CHARLOTTE, CUMBERLAND, POWHATAN & PRINCE EDWARD.

To assist with restoration efforts following the widespread outages, SEC has brought in crews from neighboring Virginia cooperatives, including Shenandoah Valley E.C. and Prince George E.C., as well as Randolph EMC and Piedmont EMC from North Carolina. Additional contract line crews and tree trimming crews have also been called in. In total, SEC has called in more than 52 line personnel and 15 tree contractors in addition to our normal staff.

These additional outside crews, along with all available SEC crews, will be working throughout the day and into Sunday night until power is restored to all members. We do expect restoration efforts to last into Monday, and urge all remaining members without power to make the necessary preparations.

Members are reminded to exercise extreme caution around downed power lines, and to contact SEC and local authorities should they encounter any damaged electrical infrastructure.
