SEC Power Restoration Efforts Continue in Wake of Appomattox Tornado

CREWE, Va – Southside Electric Cooperative (SEC) lineman, contractors and mutual aid co-op crews worked through the day Thursday to restore power to members following the severe weather which swept through Virginia on Wednesday night. The National Weather Service has confirmed that an EF-3 tornado struck Appomattox County, the hardest hit area amid widespread outages in SEC’s service territory.

As of 7:30pm Thursday, just 219 co-op members remained without power in 7 counties across central and southern Virginia, following an outage height of 4,500 the previous night.

Joining SEC’s 65 full-time linemen in the power restoration efforts were 16 contractor crews, 10 right-of-way clearing crews and 15 mutual aid crews from neighboring cooperatives. The mutual aid crews included three Virginia co-ops, Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative (MEC), Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative (NOVEC) and B.A.R.C. Electric Cooperative (BARC), along with Jacksonville, NC-based Jones-Onslow Electric Membership Corporation (JOEMC).

In total, 140 additional personnel were utilized to help restore power to SEC members following the storm.  SEC thanks all those involved in the restoration efforts, and appreciates the patience of its members during this time.

SEC reminds members to stay away from downed power lines or fallen trees/limbs that may be in close proximity to them. Do not attempt to move downed lines under any circumstances, and exercise extreme caution around any damaged electrical infrastructure.  Please report any damage to the Cooperative and/or local law enforcement in the event of an emergency.

Members should report power outages to SEC by calling 1-866-878-5514.  For outage information, check the SEC Outage Map here: http://outage.sec.coop/gridvu.
