SEC Prepares for Major Winter Storm

Members across service territory are urged to make emergency preparations now

CREWE, Va – Southside Electric Cooperative (SEC) is closely monitoring the approaching winter storm system, and is making all necessary preparations in anticipation of a major winter weather event across our service territory.

With a forecasted storm duration of 24-36 hours, beginning Friday midday and lasting into Saturday afternoon/evening, frozen precipitation totals ranging from 8 to 24 inches are expected across southern and central Virginia.  Members are urged to prepare for a possible prolonged, multi-day outage restoration process.  Initial outage response and restoration may be hindered by heavy snow and high winds, delaying repairs to storm-damaged electrical infrastructure.

SEC has pre-staged the necessary materials and personnel which we anticipate will be needed to restore power to our members over several days, beginning Friday. These include:

  • 75 additional contract electric linemen
  • 25 additional contract tree-trimming personnel
  • 20 additional mutual-aid linemen from other co-ops (requested)
  • 100 full-time SEC field personnel (includes 65 SEC linemen)

Significant ice and snow accumulation, coupled with high winds on Friday and Saturday, are expected to cause widespread outages into the weekend.  Broken poles and downed lines are expected, and hazardous travel conditions may initially delay outage restoration efforts.

SEC members are urged to make the necessary preparations for prolonged interruptions of power resulting from the winter storm. These preparations include preparing an emergency kit that contains the following: flashlights, extra batteries, a battery-powered radio, water, non-perishable food items, alternate sources of heat and emergency contact numbers. Filling vehicle gas tanks and fully charging mobile phones ahead of time is highly recommended. For more information, please go to:

SEC reminds members to stay away from downed power lines or fallen trees/limbs that may be in close proximity to power lines. Do not to attempt to move downed lines under any circumstances, and exercise extreme caution around any damaged electrical infrastructure.  Please report any damage to the Cooperative and/or local law enforcement in the event of an emergency.

Members with special medical needs should make the necessary arrangements, including alternate lodging or medical care.

Members should report power outages to SEC by calling 1-866-878-5514.  For outage information, check the SEC Outage Map here:

Members may get additional information on SEC’s social media channels, via Facebook & Twitter.  SEC also urges members to download the SEC mobile app, available for free on the Apple App Store or Google/Android Play Store.
