CREWE, Va – Southside Electric Cooperative (SEC) line crews have been deployed to restore service after strong wind gusts have caused widespread outages in Central and Southside Virginia this evening.

As of 11:20 p.m., 7359 members affected by 122 different outages in Southside Electric Cooperative’s (SEC) service area are without power. Counties affected by these outages include Powhatan (2553), Brunswick (868), Lunenburg (768), Dinwiddie (761), Prince Edward (541), Chesterfield (319), Charlotte (284), Amelia (221), Nottoway (216), Cumberland (194), Campbell (123), Appomattox (28) and Bedford (4).

While the extent of the wind damage to SEC territory is still being assessed at this time, crews are working overnight as safety allows. SEC has enlisted the aid of contract crews and requests for assistance have been made to neighboring cooperatives.

As the wind chill advisory remains in effect with temperatures as low as -2 degrees and wind gusts expected to rise to as much as 40 mph, SEC members without electricity at this time should take necessary steps to prepare for an extended outage. Special precaution should be taken by members who may rely on oxygen machines or other types of life support equipment, and/or members requiring alternate heating sources.

SEC will be monitoring the weather conditions throughout the night and into the morning as the hazardous weather conditions continue. We will keep you updated on any further severe weather.

Members are urged not to attempt to move downed lines under any circumstances, and should exercise extreme caution around any damaged electrical infrastructure.  Members should report all such damage to the Cooperative or local law enforcement in the event of an emergency.

Members should report outages to the cooperative at 1 (866) 878-5514.  For updates, check the SEC Outage Viewer at
