CREWE, Va – While the most recent forecasts are predicting that Hurricane Florence will have less of an impact on most of Virginia, Southside Electric Cooperative (SEC) is closely monitoring the approaching storm and making all necessary preparations.

SEC has pre-staged the necessary materials and personnel for storm restoration, including 12 cooperative mutual aid crews and two contract crews on standby for assistance.

Wind and rain are still expected across SEC’s service territory. Hurricane Florence is large, so a slight shift in its path can change the impacted areas.

SEC members are always urged to be prepared for interruptions of power as severe weather approaches. These preparations include putting together an emergency kit that contains the following: flashlights, extra batteries, a battery-powered radio, water, non-perishable food items, medications and emergency contact numbers. Filling vehicle gas tanks and fully charging mobile phones ahead of time is highly recommended.

Members with special medical needs should make the necessary arrangements, including alternate lodging or medical care.

SEC reminds members to stay away from downed power lines or fallen trees/limbs that may be in close proximity to power lines. Do not attempt to move downed lines under any circumstances, and exercise extreme caution around any damaged electrical infrastructure. Please report any damage to the Cooperative and/or local law enforcement in the event of an emergency.

Members should report power outages to SEC by calling 1-866-878-5514 or via text for those members enrolled in the TextPower program. For information on how to enroll in the program, please visit our website at
