What is a loss of power supply?

A loss of power supply occurs when available electricity across the region is limited or when demand increases faster than supply can respond.

This may happen when:

  • Extreme heat or cold drives unusually high electricity use
  • Power generation resources unexpectedly go offline
  • Transmission constraints limit the flow of electricity
  • Fuel supply issues affect power generation

These events are not caused by damage to local power lines or equipment.
