Safety and Preparedness Tips:
- Build or restock your emergency preparedness kit: Ensure you have essentials such as a flashlight, batteries, cash, and first aid supplies.
- Charge cell phones and battery-powered devices: Ensure you have alternative charging methods for your phone or any device that requires power. If you use your car to recharge devices, do NOT keep the car running in a garage, partially enclosed space, or close to a home, as this can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Know how to operate your electric garage door manually: Locate the manual release lever of your electric garage door opener and understand how to use it.
- Keep your car’s gas tank full: Remember that gas stations rely on electricity to power their pumps, so it’s important to maintain a full tank of gas.
- When using your generator: read all safety instructions, use proper cords or a transfer switch if connecting to building wiring, refuel only when off, and ensure proper ventilation to prevent overheating and carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Stay clear of downed power lines: Do not approach or touch downed power lines. Report them immediately to Southside Electric Cooperative for safe handling.
